Maui Haiku

I was able to enjoy a month in Maui during this past winter.   The visit coincided with the celebrated lunar new year and the annual whale migration. I rediscovered a book of Kerouac Haikus along with Basho in my iPad library. Both were quite suitable for the location and the monthlong duration of my visit   Due to the winter weather there were frequent rains and a mist layer in the hills which led to a sensory encapsulation and quietness.  This seemed to enhance a poetic view on things that I’ve tried to reflect in this series.  In the series I picture myself as the lone traveler making a trek to a hilltop to a place of remembrance, reflection and the new year.

At times I’ve thought of my photos as Haikus. The tonality I chose is to further enhance this vision by providing a mystic hue.

Molokai morning
Winter’s mist delays time’s call
One breath remembered

Winter’s new moon
In Maui
The whales sing

The whales song reaches
new moon’s dragon brings luck
Welcome the rabbit

The mist in the hills
Winter’s night rains dampen my walk
Quiet Remembrance.

I walk in the hills
The winter’s mist welcomes me
Lay Quiet

In winters mist
Basho’s pond patiently waits
Spring will come
